ABSTRACT. This paper examines whether socio-economic and psychological factors which are known to influence lottery purchases lead to excess investment. Using the five lottery-type stock preference measures, I find that about 34 to 39% of investors hold lottery-type stocks at least once during the sample period. This study shows that the propensity to gamble and investment decisions are correlated. At the aggregate level, individual investors prefer stocks with lottery.
